The debut album of Jake Stephens, "How The Water Feels", is a rollingly acoustic-vibed homage to the poetry of the water, especially the ocean.
Stephens was born and raised in Jacksonville Beach, Florida where he was exposed to the ocean within days of birth and learned to surf from his father, a life-long surfer. Stephens later also became intertwined with the mountains, eventually beginning a life-long exploration of rock-climbing and all things mountain. Combined with his early-aged love of bicycles, these experiences of flow and nature and exploration came to define his world, and ultimately his music and writing.
His songs represent the incarnation of these journeys and experiences, interlaced with their poetry and imagery, along with experiences and love and travel and how this all flows into musical expression.
His favorite surf spots are Blacks, Windansea, Playa Negra, and San Juanico. His favorite climbing areas are Looking Glass, The New, Hueco, Cochise, Castle Valley, Tahquitz, and the Wind Rivers. His favorite trails are in Pisgah, Crested Butte, and Tucson.
Joining Jake on "How The Water Feels" are several leading San Diego- and Tucson-based musical talents: Co-producer David Carano (also, bass and guitars); Danny Campbell (drums); Chad Farran (drums); Bill Ray (drums); Tanya Whitman (vocals); and Jamie Laboz (lap steel).
